"My family was Orthodox Jewish. God was a judge. And when I was eleven and the Cuban Missile Crisis happened, everybody else was terrified," recalls Rabbi Jacob Staub. "I was very happy because I thought the world was going to blow up before I hit thirteen, and when I was thirteen I would be responsible for my sins and I would burn in Hell. And I knew, subliminally, I guess, I knew somehow that I could never make it as a righteous Jew who would have God’s approval."
