After a dramatic denominational struggle, Rev. Matt Smucker was the first openly gay person ordained in the Church of the Brethren. Ten years after that milestone, he reflected on his faith and ministry:

"One of my favorite magnets I have at home says, 'Jesus, save me from your followers.' I want to be so different from them, but I’m also grounded in the same tradition as them. Many times I’m like, 'I don’t want to be a Christian minister!' There’s so much baggage that comes with that. But then I’m reminded and challenged to be a different representation of that. It's a label I love and hate at the same time."
